Bedtime can be when your child is most open to sharing things with you about their day, things that are bothering them, or something that happened that hurt their feelings. Inviting your child to identify where it hurts can lead to an opportunity to provide comfort and reassurance.

Trigger Warning
Trigger Warning: During this activity, children are asked to close their eyes. This may be potentially upsetting for some children. Please adapt as necessary to best meet the needs of your child. For example, instead of closing his or her eyes, your child could focus on a favorite stuffed animal or blanket nearby.

Activity

If you sense that there is something distressing your child, show him/her an assortment of fun, colorful Band-Aids. Ask your child, “May I please put a Band-Aid on you?” Wait for a response. If “yes”, ask your child, “Do you have a hurt on the inside or the outside?” Wait for their response. Let them know “inside hurts” can be things that made them feel sad, mad, disappointed, frustrated, or embarrassed. Ask your child, “Would you like to tell me about your hurt?” Wait for their response. Invite your child to choose a Band-Aid. Put the Band-Aid on their hurt. If the hurt is on the inside, the Band-Aid can be placed over the heart or wherever the child would like it.

Make eye contact and tell your child that you are so sorry that he/she is hurt and that God, our Heavenly Father, loves us and cares about us always, especially when we are hurt. He knows us inside and out so we can go to Him with our hurts knowing that He cares and understands. God has also promised that He will comfort us when we’re hurting and that He will always be with us no matter what.

After completing this activity, read through the following verse and prayer with your child.

Verse

“He heals the brokenhearted and bandages their wounds.” -Psalm 147:3

Prayer

“Lord, thank you that you care about us and have promised to be with us and that nothing – even things that hurt and upset us – can separate us from your love.”
